Osian Desert Safari
The ancient Thar Desert town of Osian, 75 k/m north of Jodhpur, was a great trading centre between the 8th and 12th centuries when it was dominated by Jains.
The wealth of Osian‘s medieval inhabitants allowed them to build lavish and exquisitely sculptured temples, most of which have withstood the ravages of time.
The largest of the Jain and Brahman cal temples is dedicated to Mahavira, the last of the Jain Tirthankars. The sculptural detail on the Osian temples rivals that of the Hoysala temples of Karnataka and the sun temple of Konark in Orissa. It’s worth visiting this place should you have the time. Trip to and back is 6 hrs.
As a smaller version of the desert town of Jaisalmer Osian is also popular for the SANDUNES with Camel Safari and the beautiful sunset. One could also enjoy the thrill of the jeep safari on the dunes and the evening dinner in one of the camps enjoying local folk.
